Call for Nominations - HCUP's Outstanding Article of the Year Awards

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will recognize researchers published in peer-reviewed journals in 2012 that used HCUP databases to explore and address health care research topics and issues. Work honored will demonstrate how HCUP has contributed to these areas.

The call for nominations is now open and will close on Friday, April 12, 2013, at 11:59 P.M. EDT. Please send the completed application form and additional material listed below to HCUP@ahrq.gov. AHRQ will be selecting up to two award recipients.

Contents:

All nominees must have been published in a peer-reviewed journal during the 2012 calendar year and demonstrate that their work excels in these core criteria:

  • Important or timely research topic relative to the author's field of research
  • Outstanding quality of research
  • Implication for application in future practice and/or research
  • Innovative and inspiring perspective on health, the health care field, public health policy or research
Articles may be on any subject that can be investigated using HCUP data. Topic examples include:

  • Clinical innovations and/or medical practice enhancements
  • Advancements in the understanding of a condition or procedure
  • New or alternative research design approaches in viewing outcomes
  • Contributions to understanding the health services field through data linkages or enhancements
  • Characteristics of a health care market or the U.S. health care system
  • Identification of health care practices (or changes in practices and behavior) within or across a population
  • Impact of changes in health care behavior or policy
  • Improvements on the understanding of health care policy initiatives
  • Demonstrations of how research can be translated in to policy practice

Researchers may self-nominate or be nominated by another individual (e.g., a colleague of the author or authors) and should provide the following information:

  • A completed application form with the names of all candidates, affiliations, addresses, telephone numbers, and e-mail addresses
  • A copy, citation, or link to the work that includes HCUP in its analysis
  • A 1-page description of how the work excels in the core criteria described above
Application material should be e-mailed to HCUP@ahrq.gov by April 12, 2013, with the subject line "Outstanding Article of the Year Nomination."

Recognition recipients will be notified on or before May 10, 2013. Up to two candidates will be chosen to receive the award.

All applications will be reviewed by an HCUP Award Committee. Award recipients will be chosen based on the criteria outlined above.

Awards will be presented during an HCUP session at AcademyHealth's Annual Research Meeting, which will be held June 23 - 25 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Complimentary registration as well as transportation and accommodations for the event will be provided for the lead authors. While they will not receive travel and board, secondary authors, as well as the lead author, will be recognized with a plaque.
